IMPACT:

Genesis Health System in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois implemented HealthStream’s OneSource Medical Product Training and improved their processes for introducing new medical products to the Genesis network. HealthStream’s OneSource provides engaging, interactive courseware that gives employees the opportunity to learn and train on medical products—often with virtual simulations—from a wide range of manufacturers. Because it is all online, employees can train at any time and from any place.

 Genesis’s achievements from this initiative include:

  • A blended learning environment for medical product training that allows both video learning modules and practical hands-on training to build competency more quickly and effectively

THE CHALLENGE:

Genesis Health System serves a 10-county market in Iowa and Illinois and has served these communities since1869. The health system offers services ranging from acute and tertiary hospital care to home health, primary care, long term care, rehabilitation, and hospice care. Genesis has more than 5,000 employees, 700 physicians, and 665 licensed beds. Prior to implementing OneSource, Genesis introduced new medical technology and devices to staff in much the same way as many hospitals. The vendor would spend a few days rounding on staff, perhaps spending 5 to 10 minutes on each unit, introducing the new technology, usually while staff were working. The process did not support staff who were busy with patients, working different shift, or away from the unit during the limited time it was possible to be introduced to the new technology prior to its arrival on their unit. This process left the health system with no way to ensure that all employees had received the training. In addition, the process was cumbersome for the health system to monitor and left significant gaps in employee competence with new medical technology and devices. Quite importantly, it often interrupted the delivery of patient care.

SOLUTION:

Genesis was incorporating an upgraded care device from Bard Medical-a leading manufacturer of products focusing on disease management in three key areas: vascular, nurology and oncology. Genesis wanted to mirror Bard’s best practices and recommendations for implementation, which included a blended learning approach that incorporates video learning modules as a prerequisite to hands-on training. The hands-on training is offered to employees outside of their units to ensure that workday distractions are minimized. To implement Bard’s best practice recommendations, Genesis partnered with HealthStream to ensure that all end users would be thoroughly trained on the product before Bard educators arrived for hands on training. HealthStream’s OneSource allows for easy course assignment with automated tracking and reporting and insightful analytics that provide data on course completion and training effectiveness. Angela McGonegle, Infection Prevention Specialist of Genesis, recently shared her experiences with the implementation of HealthStream’s OneSource solution for medical device training. Ms. McGonegle offered that “the hands-on portion of the training was less time-consuming than expected because our clinicians were well prepared by the videos.” She added, “The staff had comments and questions based on what they had seen in the videos. In addition, core groups of staff got some more in-depth training, allowing each unit to have ‘super users’ that act as an additional resource for that unit.” OneSource allowed Ms. McGonegle and her team to carefully plan for the arrival of the new technology. She and her team used OneSource to assign video modules to staff for viewing prior to the hands-on training after which staff were able to self-enroll in the classroom training. OneSource’s reporting allowed Genesis to produce weekly registration reports to monitor training progress, distribute weekly assignment completion reports provided by the HealthStream Learning Center to all attendees.

RESULTS:

The blended model proved much more effective than the “shotgun” approach of a typical vendor’s site visit for training. The videos help trigger recall of critical information, which can make the learning process faster and also helps to ensure that the learning really becomes imbedded in the staff’s clinical practice. A small group environment facilitates real learning as well as the sharing and adoption of best practices. Bard provides more one-on-one time and small groups to drive home how to use the technology and reinforce overall best practices and clinical education. Genesis trained a total of 1,200 people across five sites and multiple differing clinical environments in this two-part process. Ms. McGonegle shared that Genesis had allowed six to eight weeks for the video portion of the training— which was actually completed in just seven weeks. The hands-on training took another seven weeks to complete with a 96% completion rate. Ms. McGonegle shared that the old method of training staff would have likely taken longer and, perhaps more importantly, not been as effective. She stated, “The old way was unplanned and very hit or miss.” Lastly, Ms. McGonegle said that the successful implementation of this learning program was based on the thoughtful foundational work done by her team. “It is a fast process, but this education is well-planned in advance of the arrival of the new technology. OneSource provided an ideal means for Genesis, Bard, and HealthStream to collaborate on an effective medical technology training solution. We ended up with an education program that included a way to track it, release it, schedule it, and then execute prior to the actual arrival of the technology.” Genesis has since used this same method to introduce and train staff on new medical technology from other manufacturers after the success of this program.
