Prehospital Care of Pregnancy and Common Complications

Course Description:
Participating in the birth of a child is an exciting and rewarding experience. In most cases, the EMS professional's involvement will be limited to providing supportive assistance to the mother and initial care of the newborn. However, obstetrical emergencies can arise, and these require special knowledge. This course reviews the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system, normal physiology associated with pregnancy, pathophysiology, normal deliveries, initial care of the newborn, obstetrical emergencies and neonatal resuscitation.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this online activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy, physiology and terminology of the pregnant patient.
  • Discuss the pathophysiology and management of common disorders related to pregnancy.
  • Discuss the three stages of labor, the prehospital management of a normal delivery and care of the newborn infant.
  • Describe the management of common complications of delivery.
