Course Description: We live in a world under constant threat of terrorism. This course, the first in a series of four parts, provides information to help you identify scenarios and key indicators of an event involving chemical agents or toxic industrial materials. It also provides an overview of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or high-yield explosive (CBRNE) materials. It covers mechanisms of action, clinical signs and symptoms, initial evaluation, triage, and field treatment of victims. And it discusses personal safety, protection, and decontamination options in responding to these events.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this online activity, the participant should be able to: - Identify scenarios or key indicators of a WMD/terrorism incident involving the release of one or more chemical agents or toxic industrial chemicals.
- Discuss the mechanism of action, clinical signs and symptoms, initial evaluation, triage, and field treatment of victims contaminated with one or more chemical agents or toxic industrial chemicals.
- Determine appropriate personal safety and personal protective equipment to be donned while responding to an incident involving the release of one or more chemical agents or toxic industrial chemicals.
- Discuss decontamination options and patient transport when responding to patients who have been potentially exposed to the release of one or more chemical agents or toxic industrial chemicals.
