Medical Causes of Altered Mental Status

Course Description:
Disorders of the nervous system can be difficult to recognize, yet they often require rapid assessment and immediate transport to an appropriate medical facility in order to prevent a patient's condition from deteriorating. This course will review the components of the nervous system and discuss causes, signs, symptoms and treatment for patients who experience neurological disorders due to medical causes.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify main components of the nervous system.
  • Identify the medical causes, signs, and symptoms of:
    • Coma
    • Stroke
    • Seizure
    • Diabetes
    • Drug intoxication
    • Infection
    • Hypoxia
  • Given a scenario, determine the appropriate treatment for a patient experiencing:
    • Coma
    • Stroke
    • Seizure
    • Diabetes
    • Drug intoxication
    • Infection
    • Hypoxia
  • Given a scenario, determine the appropriate score to assign a patient using the Glasgow Coma Scale.
