Course Description: Lightning strikes cause more fatalities in most years than any other natural phenomenon, including tornadoes and hurricanes. Approximately 1,000 to 5,000 people are struck by lightning each year in the United States. Of those struck, approximately 50 to 300 will die of associated injuries. This course will describe the various types of lightning strikes and their associated injuries.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: - Describe the incidence, morbidity, and mortality associated with lightning strike injury.
- Describe the characteristics and physics of a lightning strike and the related clinical implications of each characteristic.
- Discuss the mechanisms of lightning strikes and the related clinical implications of each.
- Differentiate between various treatments and interventions in the management of lightning strike injuries.
