Course Description: Every cell in the human body requires oxygen to perform the work necessary to maintain the body's homeostasis. It is the function of the respiratory system to provide the body with a continuous supply of oxygen. In the out-of-hospital setting, patients with respiratory disease and trauma present a challenge to the EMS professional. This course will present signs and symptoms commonly associated with emergencies involving the respiratory system, and appropriate assessment and management procedures.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: - List the signs and symptoms commonly associated with a patient experiencing a respiratory emergency.
- Describe the sequence and the components of the initial, focused, and ongoing assessments of a patient experiencing a respiratory emergency.
- Given a list of signs and symptoms, choose the patient who is a candidate for the use of high-flow oxygen.
- Given a list of signs and symptoms gathered from a primary assessment, formulate a treatment plan for managing a patient experiencing a respiratory emergency.
