Assessment and Care During the First Four Weeks of Life

Course Description:
Neonates are a special group with specific characteristics and needs. It is critical that EMS professionals be knowledgeable of a neonate's growth, development, and special needs. Knowledge permits a better understanding of specific medical problems and their impact on a baby during the neonatal period. Additionally, knowledge better enables the healthcare provider to recognize actual and potential life-threatening conditions and to render the most beneficial care.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define a neonate and describe the normal appearance, growth, and development that occur during the neonatal period.
  • Formulate a plan for the assessment of a neonate and distinguish between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Determine the appropriate initial management techniques needed to address difficulties with the airway, breathing, and circulation.
  • Identify specific pathophysiologic conditions in terms of assessment findings and treatment.
