The EMS Response to Toxic Exposures

Course Description:
Toxicology is defined as the study of the adverse effects of chemicals or physical agents on living organisms. Ten percent of all emergency department visits are the result of poisonings, so it is important to know how to access resources for treatment of poisonings and overdoses. This course will present the signs and symptoms and management principles for inhaled, ingested, injected, and absorbed poisons and toxins.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe general principles relating to the assessment and management of the patient exposed to a toxin or poison.
  • Describe general principles for managing the patient exposed to the following: inhaled poison, injected poison, or absorbed poison.
  • Given a list of signs and symptoms, distinguish between alcohol- and non-alcohol-related health problems.
  • Given a list of signs and symptoms, formulate a patient treatment plan for common toxicological emergencies.
