Course Description: Pediatric patients are a unique population that requires specialized skills to appropriately manage in emergency situations. The pediatric patient is not a "small adult." There is a vast difference in not only the approach of how to assess and treat a child, but also in handling the entire family unit during the crisis. This course will describe patterns of growth and development and discuss assessment and treatment plans for the pediatric patient who experiences a traumatic or medical emergency.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: - Describe variances in the patterns of growth and development in the pediatric patient.
- Identify a child in acute respiratory distress, using the Pediatric Assessment Triangle.
- Recognize the components of child maltreatment and the interventions and appropriate reporting requirements.
- Formulate an appropriate plan for the assessment and treatment of a pediatric patient experiencing a traumatic/medical emergency.
