Basic Airway Management

Course Description:
Airway emergencies can be lethal unless detected and treated quickly and appropriately. This course will describe pathophysiology as related to the airway, discuss assessment techniques and appropriate therapies for managing common airway emergencies, and address several special considerations.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recall the primary goal of airway management.
  • Define the following terms:
    • Pharynx
    • Larynx
    • Epiglottis
    • Vallecula
    • Hypoxia
    • Hypoxemia
  • List three differences between the adult and pediatric airways.
  • Formulate a plan for management of a patient with a compromised airway, given a scenario.
