Course Description: Lesson I: detailed description of the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system, organs and hormones that each endocrine organ secretes; effective methods for assessing organ function. Lesson II: most common disorders including diabetes, thyrotoxicosis, myxedema coma, hypoparathyroidism, Addison's disease and Cushing's syndrome.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: - Describe the roles of the pancreas, anterior and posterior pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands.
- Identify the hormones that each endocrine organ secretes.
- Describe the regulation and function of each hormone, including what stimulates and inhibits their release.
- Describe the physical and laboratory assessment associated with each of the hormones.
- Compare and contrast the types of diabetes, including physiology, laboratory findings, treatment and potential complications.
- Describe assessment findings for diabetes insipidus and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone.
- Compare and contrast thyrotoxicosis and myxedema coma, including assessment findings and treatments.
- Describe assessment findings, laboratory analysis, and treatment of Addison?s disease and Cushing?s syndrome.
