While HSG already offered many training and educational opportunities for their insureds, they recognized the need for consistent, concentrated OB education to mitigate the risks associated with OB care. The feedback HSG received from nurses was that education, culture shifts to promote safety, and ease of use in learning tools were essential to mitigating that risk.

When evaluating OB education programs, HSG identified the ACOG and AWHONN guidelines as particularly valuable to their hospitals and selected two programs, including, HealthStream’s Quality OB, to pilot. They launched two cohorts within their pilot program with a focus on OB care risks and claim trends. The program was completely voluntary and free of charge to the hospitals to encourage usage. Providers and nurses also had the opportunity to earn CEUs and CEs from participating in the program.

The pilot led to some distinct outcomes – instructors, teachers, and clinicians preferred the evidence-based resources found in HealthStream’s content, which was presented in a more meaningful way for clinicians. Because the HealthStream program was structured according to ACOG and AWHONN guidelines, it was seen as a more useful tool, and also one that created a dialogue within hospital systems about how to adjust practice in certain clinical situations.

"HealthStream’s incorporation of the ACOG and AWHONN guidelines instilled our trust in the quality of the education provided.”
