St. Anthony’s Medical Center

IMPACT: 

By utilizing the HealthStream Competency Center’s onboarding process, which included coaching, St. Anthony’s Medical Center was able to:

  • Improve organizational understanding of competency
  • Keep their team focused on their implementation timeline
  • Access a subject matter expert to answer questions and provide feedback on implementation and use of the Competency Center

THE CHALLENGE: 

St. Anthony’s Medical Center is located in St. Louis, Missouri and has 767 licensed-beds and more than 3,500 employees. Education Specialist and eLearning Coordinator Kay Elmore had a significant task when faced with the goal of having 75% of the organization engaged in improving their competency process. Quality, safety, and professional growth is critical to Elmore’s goal of providing the best possible care for patients.

Elmore shared that in 2012 and 2013, the medical center had tried another Learning Management System for competency and education. The implementation began in January and by May, it was clear that the system would not work for St. Anthony’s. The competency portion was cumbersome, and soon a grassroots effort led by the staff to change systems was underway. She added, “In addition, we tried to implement everyone at one time, at a time when there was not really a clear understanding of competency.” St. Anthony’s also needed to maintain their trauma and stroke designations.

SOLUTION: 

St. Anthony’s chose to move forward with HealthStream, including the Competency Center, after seeing a demonstration of its capabilities. According to Elmore, “The ease of use was a real differentiator, and receiving a mock Joint Commission survey was also very helpful.”

Elmore chose an inclusive implementation process, including the team that would ultimately be responsible for building and managing the process to ensure their commitment.

RESULTS:

The results have been gratifying for Elmore, for whom competency has been a passion for years. She shared, “We have been able to help leadership redefine competency from something that was relevant only for nursing to the current understanding that it is an organization-wide need.”

Coaching has made a huge difference for Elmore and St. Anthony’s during the implementation process. She offers, “If my HealthStream coaches were not there for me to lean on, it would have been a different ball of wax. I felt like I had someone available for all my questions, basic or advanced, and they were always prepared with a helpful answer. My team and I would then take that feedback and go through the process. Our coach made a difference for us. We had a touch point for insights and the coaches helped to make sure that we stayed on course.”
