Hospital Recognized for Resuscitation Quality with HeartCode®

February is Heart Month. HealthStream recognizes Heart Month by featuring one of our customers who has proven to be committed to High-Quality CPR. Bayhealth is Central and Southern Delaware’s largest healthcare system, comprised of Kent General and Milford Memorial Hospitals, numerous satellite facilities, and many employed physician practices encompassing a variety of specialties. As a Level II Trauma Center and Level II Trauma Center, Bayhealth is a technologically advanced not-for-profit healthcare system. Made up of 3,100 employees and 425 physicians, there are over 900 staff that need CPR training annually. Through its partnership with HealthStream, Bayhealth adopted HeartCode® to streamline and standardize CPR certifications, while improving CPR quality.

HeartCode is the official American Heart Association eLearning Program for Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). It is comprised of three easy steps:

PART 1: Complete the cognitive online patient cases.
PARTS 2 & 3: Practice skills and complete a skills check with a VAM or AHA instructor.
CARD: Receive an official AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers Card.

One of the biggest benefits to using HeartCode was the simplification of conducting and coordinating CPR training. Cynthia Mather, Clinical Educator, said, “Prior to HeartCode, we coordinated classes, and driving into work in the morning was sometimes a nightmare waiting for the phone calls of instructors that were going to cancel and then you were scrambling to find out who is going to cover them. With HeartCode, it never calls in sick. We always have an instructor.”

By using HeartCode® BLS and ACLS, Bayhealth Medical Center has been able to:

  • Achieve Gold Quality Achievement Award for Resuscitation through the American Heart Association (AHA)’s “Get With the Guidelines®”
  • Increase staff confidence and competence, ensuring safety and best practice for patients needing CPR
  • Simplify the process of coordinating CPR classes for 900+ staff
