Improving resuscitation through training demands innovation in science and education

Resuscitation is an area of healthcare that offers significant opportunities for outcome improvement. Despite widespread efforts to improve the in-hospital survival rate, resuscitation success has remained in the vicinity of 26% for 20 years. A 42% outcome discrepancy rate across organizations using the same resuscitation training system indicates that consistency is a serious problem.

However, there's an alternative to this lack of progress. Predicated on the belief that competition and choice in the resuscitation training market can drive innovation while simultaneously lowering cost, HealthStream offers the Resuscitation Training Suite from the American Red Cross—a newer training option with significant promise to improve outcomes. A Demonstration of Value for Resuscitation Training

In 2018, the U.S. military switched to American Red Cross for resuscitation training. Over that time the estimated savings has been $2.2 million, achieved while training 224,000 people, involving 593,000 man hours. Since then, more than 5000 U.S. healthcare facilities also have embraced this move to smarter resuscitation training. In recognition of this success, for 2020 HealthStream and the American Red Cross were honored with Brandon Hall Excellence in Technology Awards for the innovation involved in this program. The Genesis of the American Red Cross Resuscitation Suite

The original education for resuscitation came from the Red Cross during World War I. Therefore, it's no surprise that the American Red Cross accepted the challenge of developing training for improving resuscitation outcomes. They had multiple reasons:

  • The Institute of Medicine (IOM) finding that the cardiac arrest survival rate was flat despite efforts to improve meant it was time to “move the needle.”
  • The military needed a better resuscitation training program.
  • Hospitals and other healthcare organizations wanted resuscitation training that went beyond a pure cardiac care focus.
  • Other resuscitation training options were rigid and offered little flexibility
  • There was a need to supplement ILCOR resuscitation guidance with other possible resuscitation causes.

Streamlined Training

The American Red Cross development strategy focused on creating streamlined training, with filmed scenarios of real healthcare settings, not animations or cartoons. They also paid attention to broader resuscitation needs, with the intention to promote and develop critical thinking and essential decision-making skills. Including and promoting a reality-based team approach to resuscitation also is a significant component.

Science and Education Innovation

Pairing advances in the clinical science of resuscitation with new scientific findings about education is a better formula for creating better outcomes. This dual inspiration for the American Red Cross Resuscitation Suite leads to competency-based training that can accommodate different learning needs and styles. Its incorporation of additional non-cardiac content, from OB/GYN organizations like ACOG and the Surviving Sepsis Campaign and other sources acknowledges that cardiac arrest can result from many different situations, all of which influence outcomes. The American Red Cross curriculum also is based on real world feedback and structured on educational evidence. Modular content makes it flexible with delivery options that can adapt to learner knowledge, making it more efficient, with the potential for shorter course times.
