Trend 1

Department-Level Scheduling Leaves Blind Spots

Most healthcare organizations still schedule nurses through individual departments. More than 57% of respondents said they schedule primarily at the department level, while 21% use a hybrid approach, and 17% have fully centralized scheduling.

What's at Stake:

This individual department scheduling can lead to a lack of visibility into current staffing coverages across their organization.

Our Key Findings and Actionable Strategies
  1. A hybrid, standards-driven model that combines unit-level autonomy with centralized visibility can improve fill rates and fairness.
  2. Leaders can invest in a single source of truth for workforce data.
  3. Consider increasing tech adoption and improved onboarding Integrating schedules, timekeeping, credentials, and HR systems can establish shared operating rules and cross-unit schedule visibility for supervisors, service line leaders and more.
Trend 2

Self-Scheduling Is the New Standard

Self-scheduling adoption is rising and most hospitals now offer some form of it. Self-scheduling can be a valuable tool in promoting goals like higher job satisfaction while reducing friction and empowering staff.

What's at stake:

Thoughtful implementation is key. Disconnected tools such as separate apps and spreadsheets can create problems - including scheduling inequities and version control problems. Staff members are generally satisfied with scheduling operations (70%) but far less satisfied with scheduling software (46%).

Our Key Findings and Actionable Strategies
  1. Transparent scheduling rules matter just as much as technology.
  2. Manager features in self-scheduling tools help prevent bottlenecks.
  3. Scheduling processes may be improving faster than the technology used to manage them, presenting an opportunity for modernization.
