Best Practices: Why Does Peer Interviewing Work for Healthcare?

This blog post continues our series of patient experience best practices from the HealthStream Engagement Institute. Every week we share information that demonstrates our expansive understanding of the challenges faced by healthcare organizations and the solutions we have identified for improving the patient experience and patient and business outcomes.

Genuine, face-to-face conversation in an unbiased, open environment brings out the qualities that define the worth of potential new employees. Engaging a candidate in discussion gives an in-depth view of the individual’s experience and skill level.

The diverse variety of perspectives that the team brings to the interview also helps employers pick up on strengths and gaps in skills and behaviors. In addition, multiple peer interviews (at   least two are recommended) help verify the accuracy of the first impression and reveal any inconsistencies.

Lastly, the opportunity for candidates to talk about their understanding of the job allows them to determine if the job requirements and their qualifications are a good match.

The Power of Peer Interviewing

  • No one knows the job better than a member of the team.
  • It is a learning experience for both the candidate and staff members.
  • A wide variety of perspectives provides valuable, on-the-mark information.
  • A realistic picture of the potential employee is the result of multiple interviews.
